Reversing climate change,
cleaning up oil spills: mushrooms could help solve our

Mushrooms Can Help Solve
the Climate Crisis. Why Are They Not Being
Researched? | | |
The United
States government has known for decades that greenhouse
gas emissions cause global warming, yet the country's
emissions have increased regardless. Now data shows that
the past 7 years have been the hottest ever recorded on
planet Earth. In fact, according to a recent report,
the Earth's global average temperature is 73% of
the way to the horrific 1.5 degree threshold that
scientists warn we must stay under at all
costs. And there is one
powerful player not being utilized in the fight against
climate change: the mighty
mushroom.
Mycelium
— a component of fungi — provides an easy,
risk-free way to reduce many of our worst environmental
impacts. Researchers are finding that mushrooms and
mycelium may be useful in various eco-improving
projects, including cleaning up oil spills,
reducing pollution, and potentially even reversing
climate change. Mycelium stores carbon in the
soil, meaning it has the potential to be a crucial
natural way to capture carbon from the air and sequester
it away underground. Because we as a species have
already emitted so much greenhouse gas, investing in
such potent carbon sinks is critical. Why are leaders
not sufficiently exploring this simple path to fighting
climate change and saving lives? Sign the petition to
demand that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
take every measure possible to address the looming
climate crisis, including by investing in mushroom
research for carbon sinks and pollution
cleanup! | | |

P.S. There is no
reason not to invest in research that
has the potential to help save millions of lives —
human, animal, and more — from climate disaster. Sign the
petition. |
