In what friends described as
a "deeply fearless act of compassion,"
50-year-old Wynn Bruce from Boulder, CO set himself
on fire in the plaza of the United States
Supreme Court Building to protest our politicians'
dangerous refusal to address climate change. The
shocking nature of Bruce's death was no mistake -- his actions
hauntingly echoed the urgency of the climate crisis
staring our politicians in the face.
Climate scientists have been
sounding the alarm on climate change for decades, and
while we have waited for world leaders to stop dragging
their feet, the warming "tipping point" looms ever
closer -- degrees of warming from which we
cannot come back, which will destroy ecosystems, create
even more extreme weather patterns, and make
life-sustaining conditions a thing of the
past.
The latest IPCC
report shows that the wealthiest
countries in the world, the U.S. included, are
responsible for significantly more emissions than less
wealthy countries. The U.S. has a responsibility to
create more ambitious climate action plans to eliminate
emissions and pull more carbon from their
atmosphere. U.S. lawmakers must
recognize Wynn Bruce's courageous act and honor his
memory with similarly courageous climate action. Sign the petition to demand
that they save our
planet!
