Key takeaway for me at least are following issues:
- There is no such thing like a confused ideology that small hydro is
good and large hydro is bad, it is all side-specific, contextual, case by
case assessment needed
- Hydropower has a role to play in deep and early decarbonistaion of the
power sector around the globe, both with its role for renewable power
supply but also for its new potential role in floating solar and wind as
well as providing necessary seasonal electricity storage from excess power
by variable renewables like wind and solar with pumped hydro.
- Hydropower development must be subject to strategic national/regional
environmental and energy deployment planning on the ground, taking into
accounts alternatives when and where possible – well before the focus on
the individual plants occur.
- Good and cautious planning might significantly reduce the various
impacts on biodiversity etc of the future projected hydropower plants –
Recent Teske et al study (2019) very crucial.
*Follow up for CAN *
- WWF and TNC scientists agreed to assist to draft a global CAN position
on hydropower. Stephan to follow up and support from CAN secretariat.

Dear all,
Two CAN members, WWF International and Nature Conservancy, had been working
on sustainability and effectiveness criteria for hydropower in context of a
move to 100% renewables. And published this report already in May.

Since we need deep decarbonisation and phase out of fossil fuels and
nuclear in line with our existing CAN position for 100% RES rather soon and
ideally well before 2050 in line with the 1.5 C IPCC report, hydropower
certainly has a role to play in next decades to support this deep
decarbonisation. Though not growing as fast as solar and wind in recent
years, with about 16% of all power it provides about 3 times more
electricity globally than wind and solar.
Jeff Oppermann, key author of the report and working for WWF will introduce
the report and the implications. And how unsustainable hydro can be
curtailed and only sustainable hydropower maintained/refurbished/build.
Here is a doodle for those interested – it will be a few alternatives for a
webinar during Wednesday 28 August. I am trying to get also an expert from
either IEA or IRENA for this webinar – both organisations have considerably
high assumptions for the future of hydropower and hence I hope we get a
good debate.
