The World Health Organization is calling for equitable distribution of an eventual COVID-19 vaccine around the world and noted that all 54 African countries have signed up to participate in COVAX, a program to develop and distribute a vaccine the WHO is co-leading with UNICEF. The health agency said widespread availability of a fully tested vaccine is unlikely before mid-2021.

United Nations
France has lent its support to a push by Group of Four members India, Japan, Germany and Brazil for a formal reform process at the United Nations Security Council in lieu of informal talks. China and Italy have pushed back against the move on behalf of United for Consensus, a group that includes Pakistan, Mexico and Egypt.

A lack of solidarity and coordinated pandemic response between countries has hampered efforts to contain the coronavirus, resulting in human rights infringements and exposing flaws in social systems, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told members of leading wealthy and developing nations this week. Guterres urged G-20 leaders to work together on a science-based approach to easing pandemic restrictions and protecting human rights and dignity.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said older adults are among groups most affected by the pandemic, but they continue to be dismissed as not important. "It's a moral bankruptcy," he said.

Foreign parties supporting rival groups in the battle for control of Libya continue to violate a United Nations arms embargo to fortify their positions and keep weapons flowing into the country, says Stephanie Williams, interim UN envoy for Libya. Military action will not solve the conflict, and negotiations are needed to bring peace to the region, Williams says.
