For years now, Trump has been threatening to gut
the Clean Water Act — specifically, the
Waters of the United States Rule (WOTUS), which was an
Obama-era regulation that sought to create more consistent
protections across all water sources. Wetlands and streams
were not previously defined as a water source in need of
protection, but the Obama administration recognized
the massive ecological effects they have on the larger bodies
of water that they feed into. So officials made the smart and
eco-friendly decision to include these bodies of water in
WOTUS's safeguarding.
But Trump finally did what he so
menacingly promised, and removed these updated regulations.
Roughly one-third of Americans drink water that can be
traced back to these soon-to-be unregulated sources.
Additionally, wetlands and streams support a hefty portion of
the country's biodiversity. Trump's new rollback is
essentially a license to poison animal and plant life that
depends on these water sources too. Trump's main goal
of cozying up to big industries, aka big polluters, is going
to harm countless lives. But as always, there are
organizations on the right side of history who plan to sue the
Trump administration, citing the clear illegality of the new
rule. Sign the petition if you want to see this
dangerous new rule reversed so that our water stays
clean!
Thank you,
