In
June, National Geographic laid off all of its
staff writers.
Starting
next year, the historic magazine with its iconic yellow
border will no longer be sold on newsstands in the
US. This is all in the name of cost-cutting, to
deliver more profits into the pockets of the Walt Disney
Corporation, which acquired the magazine in 2019.
Some
days it feels like a miracle that Earth Island
Journal has managed to hold steady and cover the
environment for four decades without pause. Yet here we
are, continuing to provide you with the deep, nuanced,
and intersectional reporting on the environment that our
magazine has come to represent.
This
has only been possible because of you — our strong
community of readers and supporters who value
independent journalism. This is why I’m hoping
we can count on your continued support. Please donate to
our Green Journalism Fund now.
