“Clean Up Georgia-Phase III” Project August, 2017
Awareness Raising Meetings
EAWM continues awareness raising meetings
in the regions of Georgia in the
framework of the “Clean Up Georgia – Phase
III” Project. The aim of the
meetings is to inform the municipalities on the
hazardous waste, in
particular, chlorine/chemicals, on the territory of
Georgia and its negative
impact on human health and the
environment.
In August 2017, the meetings took place in Sagarejo,
Lagodekhi (Kakheti
region), Kharagauli (Imereti region) municipalities and
Division for
Environment and Natural Resources of Adjara Autonomous
Republic.
Project coordinators delivered a presentation on
“Pollution of the
environment by Hazardous Waste (Chlorine) and its Negative
Impact on Human
Health and Environment” and discussed the threats caused by
chlorine (on the
territory of Georgia), utilization methods, security
measures and issues
related to HW management problems, the role of the
government, prevention,
etc.
Project coordinators instructed
participants on the safety response measures
to be addressed to avoid
similar cases. In addition, participants discussed
the negative impact of
expired chemicals on human health existing in school
laboratories.
Representatives from Gamgeoba (Administrative
Body of the Municipalities)
and subordinate administrative units of
above-mentioned municipalities as
well as reps from the Division for
Environment and Natural Resources of
Adjara Autonomous Republic attended the
meeting.
Project coordinators distributed EAWM flyers and
Emergency Response
Communication Plan among the participants of the
meetings. Meetings raised
interest among participants, who expressed their
readiness to cooperate with
the project.
The project “Clean
Up Georgia-Phase III” is implemented by a Consortium of
NGOs “Ecological
Awareness and Waste Management”, Georgian Society of Nature
Explorers
“Orchis” and “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the
Earth -Georgia” with
the financial support of the Swedish Government.
