Ten countries are responsible for
two-thirds of the world's coronavirus cases, and
"intense transmission" in the United States,
Brazil and and India accounts for half of all
cases globally, World Health Organization
Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
said this week as he urged leaders to engage
their citizens in fighting the pandemic. The WHO

Pandemic recovery efforts should
not focus solely on large businesses, as a basic
personal income program in 132 developing
countries could play a significant role in
curbing the spread of coronavirus by allowing
low-income workers to stay home, a report from
the United Nations Development Programme says.
"Unprecedented times call for unprecedented
social and economic measures," says UNDP
Administrator Achim Steiner. Full Story: Reuters

Pandemic recovery plans should
not include funding for coal-based energy or any
other fossil fuels, but focus on renewable
energy sources, which are often cheaper and
create more jobs, United Nations
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says. "There
is no such thing as clean coal, and coal should
have no place in any rational recovery plan,"
Guterres told University of Beijing students
during a lecture this week. Full Story: Climate Home News

United Nations Secretary-General
Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned an
attack by Boko Haram fighters in Nigeria that
left five civilian aid workers dead, urging
authorities in the country to bring the
perpetrators to justice. "The Secretary-General
reiterates that attacks by a party to an armed
conflict that are directed against civilians,
including those who are aid workers, violate
international humanitarian law," spokesperson
Stephane Dujarric says. Full Story: Premium Times (Nigeria)
