Ten countries are responsible for two-thirds of the world's coronavirus cases, and "intense transmission" in the United States, Brazil and and India accounts for half of all cases globally, World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said this week as he urged leaders to engage their citizens in fighting the pandemic. The WHO reports more than 10,000 health workers in Africa have contracted the virus as the pandemic ramps up on the continent.

United Nations
Leaders from around the world will deliver their messages to members of the United Nations General Assembly by video in September in an effort to limit the risk of spreading coronavirus, the group decided this week. General Assembly President Tijjani Muhammad-Bande is also encouraging participants to move side events to a virtual setting.

Pandemic recovery efforts should not focus solely on large businesses, as a basic personal income program in 132 developing countries could play a significant role in curbing the spread of coronavirus by allowing low-income workers to stay home, a report from the United Nations Development Programme says. "Unprecedented times call for unprecedented social and economic measures," says UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner.

Decades of progress in reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies around the world could be undone as the pandemic threatens access to reproductive health services including abortions and contraceptives, a study from the United Nations Human Reproduction Programme and the Guttmacher Institute says. The World Health Organization estimates that 270 million women worldwide lack access to modern contraceptive products.

Climate and Energy
Pandemic recovery plans should not include funding for coal-based energy or any other fossil fuels, but focus on renewable energy sources, which are often cheaper and create more jobs, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says. "There is no such thing as clean coal, and coal should have no place in any rational recovery plan," Guterres told University of Beijing students during a lecture this week.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned an attack by Boko Haram fighters in Nigeria that left five civilian aid workers dead, urging authorities in the country to bring the perpetrators to justice. "The Secretary-General reiterates that attacks by a party to an armed conflict that are directed against civilians, including those who are aid workers, violate international humanitarian law," spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says.
