Controlled Wood National Risk Assessment for Georgia –
Public Consultation
Report
In recent years, the interest in
voluntary forest certification has grown in
Georgia, especially towards the
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) scheme. FSC
is a globally recognized
independent certification system in the field of
forestry. Purchasing wood
products certified under FSC scheme, carrying the
respective label, means
supporting sustainable forest management.
FSC Controlled Wood
system
FSC introduced the concept of Controlled Wood in 2004.
Controlled Wood (CW)
system is a step towards voluntary forest
certification. CW is the wood,
which is NOT:
1) Illegally
harvested.
2) Harvested in violation of traditional and human
rights.
3) From forests in which high conservation values (HCVs) are
threatened by
management.
4) From forests being converted to
plantations and non-forest use.
5) From forests in which genetically
modified trees are planted.
Wood and wood products produced through the
forest management which fulfils
the requirements of all these five
categories, may obtain CW status. The
process of assessment, whether forest
management quality (and, respectively,
wood produced in this forest) meets
the above-mentioned five requirements or
not, is called CW Risk
Assessment.
FSC-based CW National Risk Assessment (CW NRA) in
Georgia
The CW NRA for Georgia is conducted by the working group
registered in
Georgia by FSC and coordinated by WWF-Caucasus Programme
Office. The initial
version of this assessment has been completed. Public
consultation of the
assessment documents was held during the period 30 June
2017 - 30 August
2017. The consultation report is available at the website
