Donald Trump signed into law the “First Step Act” , a prison and sentencing reform bill containing changes to the federal system, such as proportional sentencing and anti-recidivism program. The First Step Act aims to reduce mandatory minimum sentences and it would also incentivize prisoner participation in vocational and rehabilitative programs with early releases to halfway homes, in order to combat recidivism and combat prison overcrowding. The bill already passed with strong bipartisan support in both the Senate with 87 votes in its favor, and the House of Representative with 358 to 36 against.

United Nations experts in human rights has urged Sudan to respond to "legittimate grievances" of Sudanese people protesting against food and fuel shortages. The experts underlined an allarming and excessive use of violence on the part of Sudan’s security forces against peaceful demonstrators. «The right to freedom of peaceful assembly is an inherent element of democracies», said Clement Nyaletsossi Voule, the Special Rapporteur on peaceful assembly and association.

In his speech on the 40th anniversary of the "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan" on Jan. 1, 1979, the Chinese President Xi-Jinping said “We do not promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the right to use all necessary measures against the intervention by external forces who plot against the reunification of Taiwan and Beijing ”.

The Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) has published a report on Italy. It concludes that italian State has implemented satisfactorily only three of the twelve recommendations contained in the Fourth Round Evaluation Report on the prevention of corruption in respect of MPs, judges and prosecutors.
