On Friday, European leaders could agree on a COVID19 recovery plan that people really need and want. But Dutch and Austrian leaders could block everything. Flood them with messages calling for solidarity by email, Twitter, or on Facebook by scrolling down in this email.

Hi,

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion.” [1]

Things we could only dream about last year no longer seem impossible. Air travel all but came to a stop. Many of us living in cities have breathed cleaner air for several months. [2] Endless shopping took a backseat to our well-being and health. All because of a virus.

On Friday, European leaders may decide how we will recover from the pandemic. They are on a knife edge: they could invest in a recovery that truly protects the planet and the people the most affected by the pandemic.

But Dutch and Austrian governments are leading a few others to opt for a business as usual recovery, which will not mean better results for our future. And they could block everything.

This is where the WeMove community comes in. These leaders, the “Frugals”, care about their reputations as all politicians do. They won't want to take the blame for the failure of this rescue plan. With our partners, this Friday we are organising an action in Brussels to deliver our petition signed by 1 million citizens to make sure they feel the pressure. In the days before we deliver the petition, we need you to help us build momentum: if we publically call on the "Frugals" to fight for Europe, we could reverse their position.

Here are some examples of messages you can easily copy and paste directly as a comment on their Facebook posts:

  • Your European reputation is at stake and that we will hold you accountable for the breakdown of this recovery. Don’t block the solidarity Europeans need so dearly. #NextGenerationEU

  • EU’s GDP will shrink by about 8% — but the burden of that recession won’t be shared fairly. Europe’s worst off will be affected much more severely. That's why citizens call for solidarity #NextGenerationEU

  • COVID19 hit us all & we'll only recover together. When discussing #NextGenerationEU remember Europeans are calling for solidarity to support the most affected countries. #NextGenerationEU

  • A #COVID19 recovery plan based on solidarity is an investment in Europe’s economy. Not a sacrifice. If France, Italy and Spain are not in good shape, the EU won’t be either. #NextGenerationEU

Don’t worry if you don’t speak Dutch or German, Facebook translates your message, so these leaders will be able to read your message whatever language you write in. And because this action is so public their citizens and strongest supporters will also see these messages.

Two months ago we started our campaign for European financial solidarity to recover from the pandemic. Lots of people told us it was unthinkable. But our community took action and with our partners we pushed key leaders to support it. Just weeks ago, the Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed an ambitious recovery package. Now, EU leaders should endorse it. That’s why our community needs to spring into action again.

With hope,

David, Alex (Marsailles) and the entire WeMove Europe team
