Officials from the World Health Organization are urging people in Africa and Europe to remain vigilant in fighting the coronavirus as cases climb in both places. Dr. Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, this week welcomed news of multiple positive vaccine trial results, but noted that equitable distribution of a vaccine around the world is needed to end the pandemic.

United Nations
Iran has begun operating 174 uranium-enrichment centrifuges installed in an underground nuclear plant in violation of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, but has not significantly increased its ability to enrich uranium, International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Rafael Grossi said this week. The Iranian ambassador to the IAEA has confirmed the report.

The United Nations Population Fund has unveiled an $8 billion campaign targeting several women's rights issues, including eliminating preventable maternal deaths, gender-based violence, child marriage and female genital mutilation, as well as ensuring global access to family planning and reproductive health services. More than 30,000 people have fled violence in Ethiopia's Tigray region across the border into Sudan -- a number that could climb to 200,000 in the coming months -- and communications and access restrictions in the region are hampering humanitarian aid access, United Nations officials say. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is appealing for a cease-fire so aid can be delivered, while other UN agencies have launched a $200 million appeal to fund shelter, food and care for refugees fleeing into Sudan.
