Dear friends!

UWEC Work Group needs your support to continue covering the environmental consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine for a wide audience. We remain a critical resource for research and articles on the war are published not only in Ukrainian, but also in English and Russian. We approach translation into English with special care to access a wide audience. We work with native speakers, and our whole team is an international association of experts, journalists and researchers, enabling us not only to present information in a wide context and variety of perspectives.

Today, our work is especially important, as more research on the environmental and climate consequences of the invasion have begun to appear. Against the background of other important news stories, the Russian war’s environmental impacts and the urgent need to take decisive climate action seem to fade into the background.

Among multiple crises with important global ramifications, Ukraine must remain a priority topic in the media. Data collection and analysis of the war’s impacts on nature, nature’s adaptation to the realities of war and, eventually, post-war times and “green recovery” projects is critical. UWEC’s coverage informs global peace-building and conflict resolution. Ukrainian experience also highlights solutions that other countries affected by military action can put to use.

Global uncertainty and changing priorities affects donors and institutional funders and the initiatives they support and UWEC is not alone in feeling those changes. Our team remains committed even as grant funding decreases. UWEC maintains its publishing schedule for the time being and we are determined to continue working as long as we can.

UWEC needs increased resources for this media initiative to continue and grow. We are pleased to invite our readers to support our publication. We hope you will take this opportunity to make a one-time donation or subscribe to a monthly newsletter. For our part, we promise to continue publishing timely stories and analysis and actively participate in discussions of issues of adaptation and overcoming the environmental consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine.

Our hearts remain in Ukraine and humanity is balancing on the knife’s edge of multiple military conflicts. We will be grateful for your heartfelt commitment to the region’s environment.
