Congress has now, once again, supported the Trump administration's policy of enlarging our military budget and Nuclear Weapons arsenal.
This recent vote by Congress supporting the larger military funding  bill for 2019 , HR5515 piggybacks (with grand hypocracy) our ongoing negotiations with North Korea, trying to induce them to reduce or eliminate their nuclear weapons stockpiles.

This too smacks of the U.S. plans for nuclear modernization, fostering plans to build yet bigger and more powerful nuclear weapons in the future.

The Trump administration and the pentagon seems to have lost sight of the fantastic danger a nuclear war would bring- millions of lives lost and the possible destruction of much of the planet itself...

Although this seems to be a "done deal" there is hope for reversing these nuclear policies and establish a sound and much safer national defense strategy.  Let us press our Democratic contenders for Congressional seats in November to take a strong stand against escalating our nuclear weapon forces!

Area Votes in Congress

Developing Low Yield Nuclear Weapons. Voting 188-226 the House on Wednesday refused to restrict funding in
HR 5515 for a low- yield nuclear weapons - the W76-2 warhead to be mounted on submarine launched Trident ballistic missiles.

Military planners say low-yield or tactical nuclear weapons which are designed to obliterate targets far from the immediate battlefield.

Supporters of developing tactical nuclear weapons say the United States needs to counter Russia's extensive low-yield arsenal.

Critics say the weapons heighten the risk of Armageddon because
it is folly to think nuclear war can be waged on a limited basis...

Thanks Arn,
I really liked how Senator Ed Markey took pains to point out that "low-yield" is a complete misnomer and misrepresents the immense destructive power of these -- or any -- nuclear weapons. Here is a piece we just ran on him - https://beyondnuclearinternational.org/2018/05/26/ed-markey-on-stopping-nuclear-war/ on our Beyond Nuclear International story site with some of his inimitable quotes on the folly of all this.
Best wishes,
Linda
