“Clean Up Georgia-Phase III” Project

Meeting in Chiatura Municipality

(Imereti Region)

NGO Ecological Awareness and Waste Management (EAWM) held an awareness
raising meeting in Chiatura Municipality (Imereti Region) on 18 January
2017.  The meeting was held in the framework of the ‘Clean Up Georgia –
Phase III” Project, aiming to inform the Municipality on the hazardous
waste, in particular, chlorine/chemicals on the territory of Georgia and its
negative impact on human health and the environment.

Project coordinators delivered a presentation on “Hazardous Waste (Chlorine)
and its Negative Impact on Human Health and Environment” and discussed the
threats caused by chlorine (including cases on the territory of Georgia),
utilization methods, security measures and issues related to HW management
problems, the role of the government, prevention, etc.

Meeting participants were informed about chlorine cylinders and containers
detected by EAWM on the territory of Georgia, among them, the threat from
unreasonable utilization of chlorine cylinders/containers detected in the
village of Rukhi.

Project coordinators instructed participants on the safety response measures
to avoid similar cases. In addition, participants discussed the negative
impact of expired chemicals on human health existing in school laboratories.

The meeting was attended by Chiatura Gamgeoba (Administrative Body of the
Municipality) subordinate administrative units. The meeting raised interest
among participants, who expressed their readiness to cooperate in order to
achieve the project goals.

During the meeting, a representative of Rgani village informed EAWM
coordinators of two chlorine cylinders on the territory of the village. EAWM
coordinators will examine the territory as soon as the field works resume.

Project coordinators distributed EAWM flyers and Emergency Response
Communication Plan among the meeting participants.

The project “Clean Up Georgia-Phase III” is implemented by a Consortium of
NGOs “Ecological Awareness and Waste Management”, Georgian Society of Nature
Explorers “Orchis” and “Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the
Earth -Georgia” with the full financial support of the Swedish Government.
