Jokolo Village Celebrates Earth Day

Within the WMTR and SFG Programs Framework

Jokolo village in Pankisi Valley celebrated the 46th Earth day on April 22
where local students and invited guests planted trees and participated in an
Earth Day Fair.

As the motto of this year’s event was to plant 7.8 billion trees throughout
the world, WMTR and SFG teams decided to join the movement and plant around
200 trees at a 1.5 ha area that previously was a small scale illegal
dumpsite and was cleaned by the WMTR team and local students.

USAID/Caucasus Mission Director, Douglas H. Ball, Deputy Minister of
Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, Besarion Abashidze
and students of local school of village Jokolo planted Walnut, Tilia, Maple,
Ash-tree and Plane trees provided by Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC)
funded program Sustainable Forest Governance in Georgia (SFG).

Meanwhile, the Earth Day Fair featured a Do It Yourself stand, where kids
made new creative art items out of waste, played an e-game: Sort and
Recycle, developed within the framework of the program and Telavi Public
School #1 Eco Club students offered educational games on waste to the
audience.

Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) was launched on March 18,
2014. The initiative is funded by the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID) and implemented by the International City/County
Management Association (ICMA), together with CENN[2] – a local partner and a
sub-recipient.

WMTR is assisting the Government of Georgia in designing an adequate waste
management system in the regions of Adjara and Kakheti. The program
objective is to support a cleaner and healthier environment, minimize
adverse impacts from waste on human health and natural resources, and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.
