The ongoing pandemic is increasing the number of people who need assistance dealing with mental health issues while also limiting mental health care in 93% of countries, the World Health Organization says. WHO Emergencies Director Dr. Mike Ryan estimates that approximately 10% of the world's population has been infected with coronavirus at this point, and is urging the global community to develop a "comprehensive strategy to fight this disease."

United Nations
Members of the United Nations Security Council will resume in-person meetings this month as Russia, which had strongly objected to the decision to move to virtual meetings, assumes the Security Council presidency. The council will meet in its traditional chambers, where plexiglass barriers have been installed between delegations.

Human rights violations are widespread across all regions of Ukraine as attacks on the press, peaceful protestors, politicians and members of the LGBT community go unpunished, says United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif. If rights violations persist, they could threaten the legitimacy of the upcoming election, Al-Nashif says.

Women who belong to disadvantaged social groups in India face a higher risk of sexual violence, and the country's leaders must ensure that perpetrators face justice and victims have adequate support, the United Nations said in the wake of recent rape and murder cases in the country. "Entrenched social norms and behavior of men and boys that lead to gender-based violence must be addressed," the UN said.

A 2012 amendment to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol signed in Doha, Qatar, was ratified by Nigeria and Jamaica last week, reaching the 144 signatories necessary for it to come into force. The amendment requires countries to collectively reduce emissions to at least 18% below 1990 levels by 2020.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the news of a peace agreement between the government of Sudan and militia groups, calling on all parties to ensure the deal is successfully implemented. Aristide Nononsi, a UN independent expert on human rights in the country, has called on Sudanese leaders to ratify international human rights conventions and urged rebel groups that have not yet committed the deal to join it.
