Next week, our environment ministers could decide to keep products made with damaging palm oil out of Europe. But major brands like Nestlé, Mars and Pepsico want to block this. Ask your minister to protect our forests, not companies’ profits. |
Hi,
From spreads to cookies, from packaged bread to instant ramen. European supermarkets are full of products made with palm oil.
It’s terrible because palm oil is a major driver of deforestation. It destroys our most beautiful forests and the homes of endangered animals like orangutans, elephants and tigers. [1]
But now we have a chance to save our forests and the animals that live in them. Our environment ministers could soon pass a new EU law that would ban the sale of all products linked to deforestation. This would set a precedent that other countries could follow. [2]
The problem is that lobbyists from major brands like Nestlé, Pepsico and others are currently doing everything they can to weaken the law and get ministers on their side.
But we have a plan. Across Europe, the mobilisation against deforestation is growing. Activists and over 170 partners have taken aerial photos that visualise the rate of forest destruction. They have a simple message: in Europe, we should ban the sale of products that destroy our earth’s forests.
Vladimir, send a personal message from the heart to your minister. If they get thousands of messages, they won’t be able to ignore us.

Almost half of our grocery products contain palm oil. It is the most widely consumed vegetable oil on the planet. [3]
And we know who is responsible. Major global food brands - including Nestlé, Pepsico or Mars. They claim that they fight deforestation and that they don’t need an ambitious EU law. [4] But it’s a lie, they still use palm oil that destroys our forests. All so they can continue to make their products cheaply and sell them in Europe. [5]
Major food brands have deep pockets but when citizens come together to say enough is enough we have the power to make governments do the right thing.
Palm oil may be cheap for big business but the cost is huge for animals and plants going extinct as well as for the planet. Between 2001 and 2010, palm oil production in Indonesia alone generated up to 268 million tons of carbon emissions. That’s the same as 55 million cars or 70 coal-fired power plants. [6]
Send a message to your minister now and then get the word out!

Now with 170 partners across 14 countries, we have a huge movement ready to stop deforestation. And we’re going to continue to do everything we can to protect our forests and the animals that live in them. It’s time to challenge the capitalist system that puts corporate profits above people, nature and the planet.

In November 2021, the European Commission released a draft law to cut
deforestation out of the EU’s supply chains. The draft law would for the first
time require companies selling certain products on the EU market to trace their
origin and show that they are not linked to forest destruction or forest
degradation. Negotiations in the European Parliament and between national
ministers will start soon. EU agriculture and environment ministers met on 22
February and will meet again on 17 March, while the members of the European
Parliament have already started to define their position.
