You're working
in an office space, minding your own business when suddenly
you hear an unmistakable crash
against the glass side of the building. It's yet another
birdie who mistook the reflective walls as free, open sky —
and so it flew with full force, directly into the mirrored
glass. It falls away, dead, its crushed face evidence of this
horrible tragedy. This is what happens to more than 600 million
birds — possibly as many as 1 billion — each year in the
U.S.
Luckily, some cities are already
taking action, with New York City and tech company central
Mountain View, California taking the lead. The Big Apple in
particular sits squarely in a migration path for birdies, and
as many as 200,000 avian critters die in this one city every
year from impacts with glass buildings. Now, new and altered
buildings in both locales will need to use "bird-friendly"
materials to deter the winged animals from flying right into
reflective walls, to their deaths. But we need to expand this
movement beyond New York and Mountain View in order to save
hundreds of millions of birds' lives. Urge lawmakers and mayors in Boston, Los
Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston to pass
legislation requiring buildings to become
"bird-friendly"!
Thank you,

P.S. With one
law, legislators can save nearly 1 billion lives each year. Tell the largest cities in the U.S. to pass
"bird-friendly" glass building ordinances! |
