The EU is making new rules to define what counts as a “green”
investment – and MEPs will vote next week on a law that will lay out
these rules. It's called the EU Taxonomy.
But Big Polluters have hijacked the proposed
law. They’re pushing to get fossil gas and nuclear
labelled “green” so they can divert billions of euros
reserved for renewables like solar and wind to fund their dirty
projects. Even worse, an investigation uncovered that Russia would
be one of the main beneficiaries of the planned addition of gas and
nuclear to the EU’s list of sustainable investments. It
could earn €4 billion more per year from the inclusion of gas
alone, handing Putin more power over the EU and more money to fuel
the war in Ukraine.
It would be a devastating blow for investment in
renewables and the people of Ukraine if the law passed –
not to mention it would worsen the climate crisis and hike up our
energy bills.
But we can stop this from happening!
Ongoing campaigning has helped us get a lot of MEPs and people on
our side – and we’ve already gotten two important European
Parliament committees to reject the draft law.
