The 2025 edition of the World Water Week will focus on “Water for Climate Action”, addressing the linked emergencies of climate, environment and biodiversity, with far-reaching consequences for all aspects of life on earth. It will emphasize both mitigation and adaptation alongside the broader goal of enhancing resilience. The 5-day event will explore the entire water cycle, from freshwater to oceans, and highlight the importance of protecting natural ecosystems that are essential for climate stability and biodiversity.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will convene a series of technical sessions in collaboration with global and country partners, focusing on water scarcity, drought and sustainable water management for food security in the context of climate change.

Promoting opportunity crops towards the SDGs

27 August 2025, 16:00 - 17:30 (CEST)
Onsite (Location: C4, Level 2) and online

Forgotten crops - nowadays called opportunity crops to highlight their potential as indigenous crops that were initially neglected in favor of conventional staple crops - are increasingly recognized as valuable resources for coping with climate change, while also contributing to food security and nutrition, income generation and biodiversity. This session will highlight FAO’s efforts to identify and promote the hidden opportunities that these crops offer as solutions to climate change, introducing the Value Adding Impact Area (VAIA) “Addressing Water Scarcity in Agriculture and the Environment” (AWSAMe) initiative. In particular, the session will feature the ongoing field experiences from Malawi in promoting cowpeas and sorghum.

Strengthening collaboration with countries and partners for resilient agrifood systems

28 August 2025, 12:00 - 12:20 (CEST)
On-site (Location: Talkshow studio, L5) and online

This session will share the outcomes of the High-Level Rome Water Dialogue on WASAG – the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture, held in Rome on 17 October 2024. The event brought together FAO Members, which, through the Rome Declaration on Water Scarcity in Agriculture, committed to collaborate with each other and with partners to address agreed priorities. The session will also announce the preparation and call for the technical involvement of the 3rd WASAG International Forum, scheduled for May 2026.

Dear colleagues,

Who should lead the UN Development Programme following Achim Steiner's
recent departure?

In an article
