One Big
Thing: World Press Freedom
Day | |
Journalists
play a major role in the promotion and protection
of democracy and our unalienable rights, and they
must be able to do their jobs freely. Only truth
and transparency can guarantee freedom. –
Senator John McCain
Each
year, May 3 is recognized as World
Press Freedom Day by the United Nations. It is
an opportunity to celebrate the fundamental
principles of press freedom, assess the state of
press freedom throughout the world, defend the
media from attacks on their independence, and pay
tribute to journalists who have lost their lives
in the line of duty. Check out the video
above to watch former Secretary of State Madeleine
Albright discuss the importance of press freedom
in a democracy.
