Dear Juan,
A common vision of security for all
is indispensable for the future of the planet. Recovering from COVID-19,
addressing the perils of climate change, and responding to the range of
conflicts, risks and vulnerabilities the world now faces, requires a vision
of security that is holistic and cooperative, and a strategy that is
integrated and scalable, This requires an approach that addresses the
security, health and well-being of humanity systematically and holistically
whilst simultaneously ensuring the security, stability and sustainability of
planet Earth. All academic disciplines and scientific research can
contribute to Human Security.
Last
year IAP, the Inter-Academy Partnership (IAP) consisting of 150+ national
and regional academies, adopted a proposal by the World Academy of Art &
Science to prepare a statement supporting the importance of the UN concept
of human security as a foundational value and guiding principle aligning
scientific research with the human security of all humanity and planetary
sustainability.
Over
the past six months a working group of national academies headed by WAAS
Trustee Prof. Phoebe Koundouri prepared the attached statement and that
statement has already been endorsed by 38 IAP member
science academies.
In
order to be adopted and circulated globally, IAP requires the endorsement of
a majority of its member academies before May 10,
2024.
I
am writing to request you to support the work of IAP, WAAS and the UN by
contacting any academies in which you are a member and request their
representative to endorse this important statement prior to the due date.
The process can be completed in less than three minutes by clicking on
this
IAP response form.
Thank
you for supporting this important science initiative.
Best regards
Garry Jacobs
