The
largest nuclear power company in the
country--Exelon--now wants to get out of
the nuclear energy business. This ought
to be a great day, right?
But
here’s the problem: Exelon isn’t
proposing to shut its reactors down and replace
them with renewable energy, as it
should. Instead, it is pushing one of
the largest, most dangerous corporate schemes in
history: to “spin-off” its fleet of 23 aging,
uneconomical reactors to a completely new,
totally separate company currently called
“SpinCo”.
ACT
NOW: Say NO to Exelon's dangerous nuclear
spin-off scheme!
This
new company will be under even greater
pressure to cut costs on nuclear safety
while operating a fleet of aging, embrittled
reactors. And it will put five states and dozens
of communities at greater risk of meltdowns and
abandoned, radioactive sites when the reactors
close down.
Exelon
is proposing this spin-off because it no
longer sees a future in nuclear power.
It is increasingly risky and
uneconomical. So Exelon has decided to get rid
of its nuclear power plants because no other
company sees a future in them either.
Transferring them to a new corporation that will
only own 23 uneconomical reactors places us all
at immense risk.
