Dear friends,
We’re writing to provide you with updated information on our actions in Paris around the World Hydropower Congress (WHC) during the week of May 13-16th.
Two of our partners - Eugene Simonov from Rivers without Boundaries (RwB) and Juan Pablo Soler Villamizar from Movimiento Rios Vivos in Colombia - have pulled together notes and resources to share with civil society organizations that you can access here (“World Hydropower Congress – lessons and actions”).
This brief report provides highlights from the parallel conference we co-organized on May 13th on the eve of the WHC (where the joint statement was launched), a creative and highly-succesful protest with Extinction Rebellion at the opening of the World Hydropower Conference on May 14th, and accounts from the few civil society representatives that participated in activities inside the Congress.
The press release issued on May 15th, following our protest at the opening of the World Hydropower Congress is available here.
The joint statement ‘false promises of hydropower’ co-signed by over 250 civil society organizations from all over the world is available here in Chinese, English, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and French. As a live document that will continue to be used in our campaign initiatives, the joint statement is open to new sign-ons from civil society organizations at this webpage.
A petition for individual citizens to sign-on, focusing on the impacts of dams on World Heritage Sites is available here
Finally, here’s a sneak preview of a short video (3 minutes) from documentary filmmaker Todd Southgate, focusing on Munduruku indigenous leaders who travelled from the Brazilian Amazon to Paris to participate in actions around the World Hydropower Congress: https://vimeo.com/336879569 Password: Paris
Thanks again for your support,
On behalf of the NGO coallition: International Rivers, GegenStrömung/CounterCurrent, AIDA, Rivers Without Boundaries(RwB) and Planète Amazone
