The World Health Organization reported a record 307,930 new coronavirus cases on Sunday for the preceding 24 hours, with the largest increases appearing in India, the US and Brazil. WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr. Hans Kluge says new cases and deaths will continue to rise in Europe in the coming months, while Olivier De Schutter, a special rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, urged leaders at the United Nations General Assembly to take action against inequalities, warning that "the worst impacts of the crisis on poverty are still to come."

Members of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution designating the pandemic one of the most significant challenges faced in UN history and calling for equitable, widespread access to tools to diagnose and treat the virus. World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is urging wealthy nations to confirm their participation in the WHO's COVAX facility, a cooperative effort to develop a vaccine for the virus.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling on EU member countries to open their borders and offer support to thousands of migrants displaced after fire destroyed an overcrowded camp housing as many as 12,000 people on the Greek island of Lesbos. Authorities in Greece have set up a new 3,000 person camp close to the original camp site.

The pandemic is complicating efforts to contain an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the virus has the potential to spread into neighboring countries, the World Health Organization says. The agency is seeking $40 million to bolster its efforts against Ebola, but has seen little response.

Reports of torture, intimidation and detention of protesters in Belarus have raised concerns from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, who is calling for an investigation into the country's response to protests. More than 100,000 people have marched in the capital city of Minsk over the last four weekends as they have sought the removal of President Alexander Lukashenko.

Members of the United Nations Security Council are calling for an end to clashes between military forces in Myanmar and ethnic militia groups and urging authorities in the country to address issues that prompted around 700,000 members of the ethnic Rohingya community to flee the country three years ago. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has said that Myanmar's actions against the Rohingya people, as well as recent civilian casualties, may constitute war crimes.
