We have good news! FMO Development Bank announced it is seeking to exit the massive Agua Zarca mega-dam project in Honduras. This is the same project that Berta Cáceres, a prominent indigenous rights activist, was murdered for trying to stop -- and the same project over 180,000 of us called for the FMO to withdraw its investments from.
This month, four men were arrested for Berta’s murder -- and two of them worked for the Honduran company that would build and profit from the dam. This disturbing situation, along with the voices of hundreds of thousands of people, sent a clear message to the FMO that its continued investment in Agua Zarca was aiding gross human rights violations of environmental activists.
It’s tragic that murder and corruption is what it took for FMO to finally stop investing in Agua Zarca. Nevertheless, this is proof that if we speak up as a global community banks will be forced to listen.
We want to thank you for joining this campaign. Your voices shone a spotlight on fearless advocates who are standing up to corporate power, and risking their personal safety in the process. Berta stood up to corporations trying to build a dam that would destroy the Lenca indigenous peoples land and the Gualcarque River. For that, she became a target for corporate spying, intimidation, and ultimately murder. And this is the daunting reality of many activists in Honduras.
Although a result of many tragedies, this victory is proof that if we take action for our planet and in solidarity with those affected by corporate power, we can win.
Share the good news: FMO decided to pull out of Agua Zarca!
Thanks for continuing the fight that Berta Cáceres started,
Carys, Ledys and the team at SumOfUs
