For too
many Americans, a health scare — whether it's as life-altering
as cancer or as straight-forward as a broken leg — is all it
takes to bankrupt their entire family. Out of sheer
desperation, people are turning to total strangers over the
internet and begging for help with paying these skyrocketing
expenses. In fact, right now, one-third of money donated through the
crowdfunding website GoFundMe actually goes towards paying
health care bills.
COVID-19, the disease caused by
the novel coronavirus, is making it even more clear
how ill-equipped the American health care system is to deal
with these types of large-scale crises. Millions of
Americans have lost their jobs, left without an affordable
insurance option at a time when health care could not be more
critical. We do not yet know how many more people
will get sick before this pandemic is over, but many of them
will not be able to afford urgent intervention. And as we have
seen, COVID-19 has lasting effects on those who recover; many
will not be able to afford treatment or rehabilitation.
This fact is especially
horrifying given how many other countries around the world
have universal health care — and how much better those
countries are faring during the pandemic. Luckily, Joe
Biden is running on a platform that includes establishing a
public health care option — a welcome change from the
current president who has shown no grief for the 225,000
American lives lost on his watch, nor the millions more who
have fallen ill, been hospitalized, and are permanently
disabled. Join us in calling on the U.S. Congress to
support the creation of a single-payer, public health care
option for all Americans!
Thank you,

P.S.
Affordable, universal single-payer health care is possible. In
fact, it already exists for millions upon millions of people
around the world. It's time for the U.S. to follow suit and stop
leaving people to beg for life-saving medical treatments
online. |
