A new #SolveDifferent expedition begins
UN Environment Assembly
11 to 15 March 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya

Backed by UN Environment Clean Seas Initiative, the Flipflopi dhow - made entirely out of plastic trash - successfully docked in Stone Town, Zanzibar after its 500 kilometer-long voyage along the East African coast.

The dhow stopped at towns along the coast to change mindsets and behavior around plastic waste. Now, 27 hotels have pledged to remove straws and replace all plastic bottles with sustainable alternatives, towards a plastic-free East African coastline.

In Mombasa, the government announced the closure of the Kibarani dumpsite, where waste was directly released into the ocean, threatening marine life. Waste is now being disposed of at a more ecologically sensitive dump site.

After the success of its maiden voyage from Lamu to Zanzibar in February, the Flipflopi will be making a different expedition – this time on land, where it will travel to the UN Environment Assembly.

The UN Environment assembly will gather environmental leaders from around the world to focus on innovative solutions to environmental crises. The Flipflopi is a colourful and immediate example of how we can #SolveDifferent with plastic waste, and bring the concept of the circular economy to life.
The Flipflopi expedition arrives at its final destination in Zanzibar. There they are greeted by UN Environment Assembly president Siim Kiisler.
