A WEEK OF CIVIL ACTIONS IN SUPPORT OF EVGENY VITISHKO


On September 24, 2014, the Krasnodar court will hear Vitishko's case,
activists from Russia and abroad ask for immoderate release of
environmental defender,who was sentenced to three years in a penal colony
for "damaging the
fence"

belonging to governor of Krasnodar krai


The week of civil actions in support of Evgeny Vitishko started on
September 17. The first civil action was performed by Sofia Rusova, a
member of EWNC and a member of the "Yabloko" party, in front of Office of
the Prosecutor General of Russia.

Evgeny Vitishko is serving three years in a penal colony in Tambov region.
In 2012, he was sentenced to three years conditionally for "damaging" the
illegally installed fence belonging to the governor of Krasnodar krai,
Alexandr Tkachev. Conditional sentence was changed to real imprisonment in
December of 2013 by Tuapse city court.

The week of civil actions is connected to court hearings, which will take
place on September 24, 2014 in Krasnodar court. The court will decide
whether a real prisonment should be cancelled.

These court hearings are central in the Vitishko's case after the court's
denial in February to hear the appeal on the decision which changed
conditional sentence to real imprisonment. After that denial, Vitishko was
sent to a penal colony.

There is a chance that Evgeny will be free on Wednesday. However,
authorities of Krasnodar krai have power over the court and are putting
obstacles in a way of freeing Vitishko. If this time the appeal by
Prosecutor to cancel real imprisonment will not be upheld by the court,
there is no other effective legal remedy to free Vitishko.

Civil actions in Russia and abroad are meant to draw attention to the case
of Evgeny Viishko, environmental defender sentenced to colony in a kangaroo
trial for protecting the environment.

Environmental Watch on North Caucasus is calling upon everyone, who cares
about Vitishko and other Russian activists, to take part in a week of civil
