Training on Composting at Collage AISI in
Kachreti
Within the WMTR Program Framework
Aiming
to assist AISI College — located in Kachreti Village of Kakheti
Region — in
developing a composting and recycling system, the Waste
Management
Technologies in Regions (WMTR) Program organised training on
February
25-26.
The Professional Collage, AISI covers 12 hectare of land,
where students are
able to stay and learn in one place. Equipped with modern
technologies, the
college offers various programs, such as in veterinary
science, culinary
arts, joining, electrical engineering, tourism,
plastering, and bee-keeping
to name a few. Therefore, the college has great
infrastructure to start
composting and implementing a waste separation
scheme.
The first day of the training covered basic information
on soil, its
structure, ingredients and problems, while the second day
focused on
composting and its process, which is the best organic fertilizer
for soil.
The expert conducting the training emphasised that healthy soil is
the key
to cultivating healthy products. He noted that it is wrong to
fertilise
plants directly and do nothing with the soil. He also underlined
Georgia’s
great potential in being a key exporter of organic products to the
EU
market, however, it is highly recommended for farmers to have good
soil.
While talking on composting, the expert explained the
ingredients of
composting, the design of the bin, what should be put in,
what ingredients
are harmful, and how to take care of it. Additionally, he
talked with the
joiner to prepare all materials for building the bin
according to the number
of waste generated at the collage. It must be noted
that the second-hand
woodpiles will be used for creating the bin.
After the piles are ready, the
expert will travel to the site in order to
build composting bin together
with students within the next two
weeks.
Waste Management Technologies in Regions (WMTR) was
launched on March 18,
2014. The initiative is funded by the U.S. Agency for
International
Development (USAID) and implemented by the International
City/County
Management Association (ICMA), together with CENN[2] – a local
partner and a
sub-recipient.
WMTR is assisting the Government of
Georgia in designing an adequate waste
management system in the regions of
Adjara and Kakheti. The program
objective is to support a cleaner and
healthier environment, minimize
adverse impacts from waste on human health
and natural resources, and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions from
landfills.
