Sentencing people convicted of rape to surgical castration or death violates international human rights law and does not deter rapists more than lesser punishments, says United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet. "Tempting as it may be to impose draconian punishments on those who carry out such monstrous acts, we must not allow ourselves to commit further violations," Bachelet says.

Members of the United Nations Security Council this week voted to extend the UN Mission for Justice Support in Haiti for an additional 12 months. Helen La Lime, head of the UN office in Haiti, has reported that violence and insecurity in the country are on the rise.

Lockdowns and rules mandating social distancing and mask use are "absolutely necessary" to curb the spread of the coronavirus as cases spike in many regions, and countries must act quickly to identify patients and trace their contacts, World Health Organization officials in Europe say. Soumya Swaminathan, the agency's chief scientist, says that although progress is being made on vaccine development, it is unlikely a vaccine will be available to healthy young people before 2022.

United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths welcomes the release of over 1,000 political prisoners in Yemen under an agreement two years in the making and is urging both sides to continue talks on releasing all prisoners detained during the conflict.
