Sentencing people convicted of
rape to surgical castration or death violates
international human rights law and does not
deter rapists more than lesser punishments, says
United Nations High Commissioner for Human
Rights Michelle Bachelet. "Tempting as it may be
to impose draconian punishments on those who
carry out such monstrous acts, we must not allow
ourselves to commit further violations,"

land and resources but they are frequently
victims of poverty and discrimination, and
leaders around the world must increase efforts
to support and protect them, United Nations
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an
address marking International Day of Rural Women
this week. "Together, we must invest in rural
