Shanghai's 25 million residents
have been under a citywide lockdown since early April;
people are unable to leave their homes, no matter what,
even for food or non-covid medical care. While a strict
lockdown can help limit rising COVID-19 rates, the
Shanghai government has admitted there have been
difficulties in delivering supplies. Videos circulating on social
media show Shanghai residents desperately screaming from
their apartments for food. If the
government is enforcing a strict lockdown, they MUST be
able to meet the demand for food and medical
care!
Already, there
are reports of deaths, postponed vital procedures, and a
lack of access to lifesaving medicine. Locking people down
to protect them from COVID-19 is futile if residents
have no food to eat or medicine to keep them
healthy!
While much of China has been
accustomed to similar lockdowns throughout the pandemic,
Shanghai is in a unique position. Due to its economic
importance as China's largest city, Shanghai has
typically isolated individual buildings rather than
implementing city-wide lockdowns. Now that caseloads are
reaching a record high, the city is attempting a rollout
of China's stricter methods -- while remaining
shockingly underprepared. Shanghai city officials
aren't meeting the needs of their residents, and the
consequences are heartbreaking. Sign the petition to tell the
Shanghai government to deliver sufficient food and
medicine!
