Tomorrow is key as gas and oil industries are gearing up to grab most of the billions of euros we desperately need to recover from the COVID crisis. Take action to lock fossil fuel companies out of our future. Send a message to EU leaders before they meet tomorrow.

Hi,

Did you know that during the COVID pandemic renewable energy sources have overtaken coal, oil and gas for the first time? [1]. The big polluting companies know this, and they're fighting hard to keep alive an old system that destroys our planet and lines their pockets.

Tomorrow, EU leaders will meet to negotiate the European Union's plan of hundreds of billions of euros to recover from this crisis.

Some leaders, like French President Macron or Polish President Morawiecki, are keen to receive the money… but less keen to use it to kick-start the energy transformation Europe needs. It’s no coincidence that fossil fuel corporations such as Engie, GRTgaz, ExxonMobil andPGNiG have been lobbying hard to ensure their profits are secured in France and Poland. [2]

But there’s someone who might be pretty persuasive too. Mark Rutte and the heads of state of other greener countries such as Austria, Sweden and Denmark only agreed to this recovery plan as long as it was green. Now they have to show to their electorate they are pushing for a green agenda in Europe.

A big wave of EU wide support from citizens like us will give them the legitimacy they need tomorrow to put pressure on the likes of Macron. Given they belong to the same EU political group, Macron is more likely to genuinely listen to Rutte. Let’s give Rutte the people’s support he needs!

The best can come from this crisis, where you, and all of us enjoy sustainable ways of living. New sources of hope are popping up all over Europe in response to this crisis.

Lobbyists of fossil fuel companies see this. And they’re scared. They want to protect their profits and keep most of the European recovery plan money to fund their businesses. [3] This would keep us in the same system responsible for the current environmental emergency.

Several EU countries like the Netherlands, but also Austria, Sweden and Denmark, are still resisting the pressure and push the others to spend the money wisely, demanding this goes towards ecological plans all over Europe. But the others could take the side of the fossil fuel industries of the past and could win the negotiations.

We’ve worked too hard to let this happen. These are our representatives and they need a clear and bold signal from their voters. Can you contact Mark Rutte and other green leaders and ask them to push to lock fossil fuels out of the recovery plan?

We know that when WeMove members take action alongside other movements and organizations we can convince EU leaders to stand up for a better future. Last November, together with other communities, we convinced the EU parliament to declare a climate emergency. More recently, we pushed EU leaders to set an historic deal of several hundred billions of euros. This could help us to recover together and build a better future. Now, they have all the keys to kick-start a green revolution in Europe. Can you take action to make this happen?

[3] The European recovery plan backed by the governments includes a 30% climate spending target, but a lack of binding rules means some of the budget and recovery funds could end up being used by polluting industries like fossil fuels or industrial farming. This means that 70% of these funds might finance old and carbon intensive sectors.
