May 2020 In case you missed it: environmental updates COVID-19 has shown us that human health and the planet’s health are linked. In response to the crisis, UNEP is providing even more support to countries as they reduce the risks of future pandemics by restoring ecosystems and biodiversity, fighting climate change and reducing pollution. ECOSYSTEMS AND BIODIVERSITY Biodiversity: It’s Time for Nature The International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May kicked off the #ForNature campaign, which will lead into World Environment Day on 5 June. The theme— It's Time for Nature—highlights how nature delivers vital services to humanity and the urgent need to halt its destruction. VIDEO | ECOSYSTEMS AND BIODIVERSITY The State of the World's Forests This new report, jointly launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and UNEP’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre, calls for urgent action to safeguard the biodiversity of the world’s forests amid alarming rates of deforestation and degradation. But, rising levels of global carbon dioxide concentrations reveal that the climate crisis persists.
