In case you missed it: environmental updates
COVID-19 has shown us that human health and the planet’s health are linked. In response to the crisis, UNEP is providing even more support to countries as they reduce the risks of future pandemics by restoring ecosystems and biodiversity, fighting climate change and reducing pollution. Read on for recent online highlights from UNEP.
ECOSYSTEMS AND BIODIVERSITY
The International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May kicked off the #ForNature campaign, which will lead into World Environment Day on 5 June. The theme— It's Time for Nature—highlights how nature delivers vital services to humanity and the urgent need to halt its destruction.
As part of the global response to COVID-19, UNEP is supporting nations and partners to “build back better” – through stronger science, policies that back a healthier planet and more green investments.
ECOSYSTEMS AND BIODIVERSITY
The Act #ForNature Global Online Forum under the leadership of UNEA and Norway provides an opportunity for citizens, government and non-governmental organizations, businesses and scientific institutions from around the globe to engage in a series of open and inclusive discussions across a diverse range of topics. View the online schedule of events and register to take part in the Forum.

This new report, jointly launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and UNEP’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre, calls for urgent action to safeguard the biodiversity of the world’s forests amid alarming rates of deforestation and degradation.
According to global trends, air quality seems to be improving as the world has locked down to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. But, rising levels of global carbon dioxide concentrations reveal that the climate crisis persists.
STORY | ECOSYSTEMS AND BIODIVERSITY
Tea, one of the oldest cash crops, can play a big role in reducing poverty and rural development. But, in most tea-growing countries, farmers remain marginalized and poor. On International Tea Day (21 May) we explore how the industry can build back better after COVID-19.

Having neglected the elements that surround us, we have inadvertently made our world a less healthy place to live. See how our failure to care for the environment is affecting our own health.

EDUCATION AND ENVIRONMENT
The biggest online learning initiative in UNEP’s history–Earth School–is still underway till 5 June. This interactive adventure for kids of all ages will leave you marveling at our planet and ready to invent the future.
