This 8,000-year-old prairie is about to be destroyed, spelling death for birds      Sign Now        The Bell Bowl Prairie is a rare and crucial ecosystem that still bears imprints left by the last glaciers when they retreated from the continental U.S. thousands of years ago. Even though it's rich with wildlife, it's about to be destroyed. Located outside of Chicago, the parcel is just 5-acres large, but it sits within a 280-acre expanse that the Chicago Rockford International Airport is planning on razing to the ground. If the Bell Bowl is torn apart, it could hurt multiple species of migratory birds that are already at risk of endangerment due to climate change and human development in other regions.   So far, this ancient area has been preserved due to the management efforts of the Natural Land Institute. Yet neither the state government nor airport officials notified any local environmental or conservation organizations about the prairie's impending destruction. Rockford Airport leadership could choose to work with environmentalists to preserve surrounding ecosystems, just like other major transit hubs have, including the San Francisco International Airport (SFO). This doesn't have to be choice between creating more commerce, and wrecking birds' paradise — we can have both. Sign the petition to tell Board Chairman Paul R.
