The approval and distribution of coronavirus vaccines does not guarantee the disease will be eradicated, and governments should aim to reduce the spread of the virus to manageable levels, World Health Organization officials say as health experts study multiple variants of the coronavirus spreading around the world. The WHO has approved a vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech for emergency use to speed up vaccine access in developing countries.

United Nations
Authorities in Iran last week notified the International Atomic Energy Agency that the country plans to increase uranium enrichment to 20% -- a level not seen since the implementation of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which limited the country's uranium enrichment to 3.67%. Iran has also threatened to cease cooperation with United Nations inspectors if international sanctions against it are not lifted.

The United Nations has expressed concern over reports of a man detained in Bangladesh for photographing the relocation of Rohingya refugees to a remote island camp, which UN officials say they have still been unable to access to evaluate its habitability. The UN General Assembly last week voted to condemn Myanmar for human rights abuses that drove around 860,000 Rohingya and minority refugees into Bangladesh.

Federal lawmakers in Argentina last week voted to legalize abortions up to the 14th week of pregnancy, for rape victims and when the mother's life is threatened. The decision makes Argentina the largest Latin American country to strike down a ban on abortion.

The United Nations has endorsed the "Cut a Tonne in '21" campaign, which aims to help participants decrease their personal carbon footprint and live more sustainably. Climate scientists with the UN say the world's carbon emissions must be cut by 45% by 2030 to limit global warming to habitable levels.

Military officials in Libya have rejected a proposal from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that would see international forces deployed in Libya to monitor the country's cease-fire, claiming such a move would constitute unnecessary external interference. The UN Support Mission in Libya has formed an advisory committee aimed at gathering diverse viewpoints as the country plans for general elections at the end of 2021.
