Working together for the rainforest Petition Please SIGN: Tell Spain to pass a law to protect great apes NOW! Dear friends of the rainforests, In early 2023, the Spanish Congress and Senate passed the Animal Welfare Act, a landmark law recognizing animals as sentient beings. The Act explicitly requires the government to present a draft law to protect great apes—bonobos, orangutans, chimpanzees, and gorillas—within three months of its enactment. Those protections for great apes are now two years overdue. The Jane Goodall Institute estimates that about 140 great apes live in captivity in Spain, often under cruel conditions. Great apes do not deserve to be treated as attractions, business assets, or subjects of laboratory experiments, nor should they be kept in captivity—in zoos or elsewhere. Please sign our petition supporting the Spanish organization Proyecto Gran Simio and speak out for our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.
