An area of Amazon rainforest roughly the size of a
football pitch is destroyed every minute under Brazil’s
far-right President Bolsonaro.
The devastation is even visible from space, and has made some EU
leaders say they won’t push ahead now with a trade deal with Latin
America that would make matters worse. Vladimir, that’s a positive
sign -- but we’re not out of the woods yet.
The European Commission has just named a new trade
chief. We need to show the new boss that this trade
deal would reward the arsonists -- and that people across
Europe won't have it. That’s why we commissioned an opinion poll of
people across Europe -- and now we need to get the results into key
media in Brussels where the Trade Commissioner is sure to see
them.
Will
you chip in $2 to save the Amazon from burning down?
EU negotiators have spent 20 years working on an agreement with
Latin American countries, and all that time they’ve been
lobbied by corporations like carmakers, factory farmers and
pesticide giants to make the deal fit their needs -- at the
expense of people and planet.
75% of Europeans surveyed want the EU-Mercosur trade deal
to be stopped if it contributes to deforestation and
environmental damage, the poll conducted by YouGov shows.
But the corporate-backed trade deal still has its fans in
many governments and the European Commission, and won’t be
scrapped for good without a lot more public pressure. That’s why we
need to get these figures out there, and why we need to connect the
dots between the deal and the Amazon burning.
A number of European governments are publicly making the right
noises about the deal, and with an extra push, we could defeat this
zombie deal for good.
Will
you chip in $2 to help stop the trade deal and save the
Amazon?
The Amazon is a natural treasure, and it’s also the ancestral
home to millions of Indigenous people.
If you chip in $2 today, you can turn these poll results into
pressure on the new Commissioner and other politicians with ads in
key media in Brussels.
You and I may not have millions to lobby, but when we come
together and all chip in just a bit, we win big. You helped
defeat the awful TTIP trade deal -- and now you can stop the
EU-Mercosur deal too. Will you chip in $2 to save the
Amazon from this disastrous deal?
Yes,
I'll chip in $2 to stop the EU-Mercosur trade deal and save the
Amazon.
