United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced his condolences and offered UN support to the people of Lebanon after a massive explosion in the port city of Beirut left at least 135 people dead and thousands more injured. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon Maritime Task Force reports that its ship was damaged and several peacekeepers were wounded in the blast.

The International Labour Organization this week welcomed a decision from Tonga to ratify a convention aimed at protecting children from forced labor, sexual exploitation and armed conflict -- making the treaty the first in the agency's history to be ratified by all 187 member states. The ILO notes that although the number of child workers has decreased over the last two decades, progress could be undone by the pandemic.

Pandemic-related school closures have affected 1 billion students around the world and increased the likelihood of around 23.8 million dropping out of school without completing their education, a UNESCO report warns. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urging world leaders to reopen schools as soon as it is safe, prioritize funding for education as well as digital literacy and infrastructure, and develop initiatives to support at-risk students.

A scenario known as representative concentration pathway 8.5 and outlined by United Nations climate experts that predicts a five-degree increase in global temperatures by 2100 is consistent with actions announced by governments up to 2050 and should serve as a warning to the world, a US study concludes. "RCP8.5 is characterized as extreme, alarmist, and 'misleading,' with some commentators going so far as to dismiss any study using RCP8.5," says study author Christopher Schwalm.

Female Islamic State militants are often mischaracterized as victims and underestimated due to security forces' gender bias, warns Michele Coninsx, Executive Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate. "While women are often active as online propagandists and recruiters, their involvement in other types of activities, including violence, was less prominently documented online because of ISIS's restrictive gender norms," Coninsx notes in a report.
