DDT is a
pesticide that's so toxic and dangerous, it kills birds
and fish and even harms humans' health too. That's why,
thankfully, the U.S. banned it back in 1972. But we've since
found out that the biggest manufacturer of DDT in the nation
disposed of the poisonous chemical by simply chucking
thousands of barrels of it out into the Pacific Ocean
off the coast of Los Angeles. Even worse, when the barrels refused to sink, this company
actually punctured holes into them, meaning they've been
slowly leaking out toxic sludge for
decades.
DDT is so indestructible that
disposing of it was always a huge problem — but that doesn't
make it okay to take poisonous shortcuts. This corporation
must have known that, because they purposefully timed their
barrel-dumps in the middle of the night. The waste was dropped
so deep into the ocean that scientists didn't even have the
technology to find the evidence until 2011. By this point,
experts estimate polluters may well have dumped half a
million of these oozing, deadly barrels. And the
resulting DDT leakage has been consistently making its way up
the food chain, as larger and larger animals consume the
little creatures living in this sludge. Yet the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, under Trump's command,
doesn't want to do anything about these contaminants, seeming
content to just let them sit there. Sign the petition to demand the EPA do its job
and clean up this toxic mess!
Thank you for all that you do,

P.S. This is
not the first time a massive toxic dump has happened right off
the U.S. coast. And usually, no one ever cleans the poisonous
mess up. Demand the EPA begin a clean up operation right
now! |
