United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet this week urged forces from Armenia and Azerbaijan to halt attacks on civilians, schools and hospitals in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, saying such tactics could constitute war crimes. The conflict, now in its sixth week, is believed to have left thousands dead.

Experts have said that many wealthy countries participating in the WHO's global vaccine program have also secured batches of potential vaccines independently, and United Nations Development Programme Administrator Helen Clark says political agendas have hampered national and international efforts to slow the spread of the virus.

Implementation of a decision to outlaw abortions where serious birth defects are detected in the fetus has been delayed by Polish lawmakers in the wake of massive protests across the country. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is calling for talks between lawmakers and protesters, while President Andrzej Duda has suggested easing some of the proposed restrictions.

The United States became the first country to officially withdraw from the 2015 Paris climate agreement after waiting the required time since President Donald Trump first announced the country's intention to leave the deal. "The U.S. withdrawal will leave a gap in our regime, and the global efforts to achieve the goals and ambitions of the Paris Agreement," says United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced alarms at reports of ethnic violence in Ethiopia and called for those responsible to be brought to justice. Authorities report as many as 54 people were killed by militants, who also set fire to homes and stole livestock.
