The United States' return to the
Paris climate agreement means that countries
responsible for two-thirds of global carbon
emissions are now on the road to carbon
neutrality and climate commitments from state
and local officials have kept the US on track to
meet its obligations, despite former President
Donald Trump's withdrawal from the deal, says
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres. Climate change is driving more severe
weather like the winter storm currently
affecting Texas, and those who deny the link are
in "complete ignorance," Guterres
says. Full Story: Thomson Reuters

Members of the United Nations
Security Council met on Wednesday to discuss
COVID-19 vaccines, echoing a warning from UN
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that
inequitable distribution of doses and
stockpiling by wealthy countries could drive a
resurgence of the virus and slow economic
recovery efforts. The World Health Organization
is urging vaccine manufacturers to collaborate
to accelerate distribution and calling for
nearly $2 billion in funding for the 2021
Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan, which
aims to curb the pandemic, fight misinformation
and expand access to virus-fighting
tools. Full Story: Arab News (Saudi Arabia)

Human rights campaigners in
Pakistan are pressing lawmakers in the country
to outlaw virginity testing for rape victims,
noting the practice remains widely used despite
a decade-old Supreme Court ruling that a rape
case cannot be dismissed because of virginity
test results. The World Health Organization has
called for a global ban on virginity testing,
saying the practice is painful, humiliating and
without scientific merit. Full Story: Thomson Reuters

Rapid climate change, ongoing
destruction of wildlife and natural environments
and increasing levels of pollution pose a triple
threat to life on our planet that requires an
immediate response, a United Nations report
titled "Making Peace With Nature" says. "Our
children and their children will inherit a world
of extreme weather events, sea level rise, a
drastic loss of plants and animals, food and
water insecurity and increasing likelihood of
future pandemics," says Sir Robert Watson, lead
author of the report. Full Story: The Associated Press

Renewed support from the United
States for international peace efforts in Yemen
offers a glimmer of hope for the war-torn
country, but continued offensives by Houthi
militia groups threaten peace prospects, says
United Nations special envoy for Yemen Martin
Griffiths. Mark Lowcock, Under-Secretary-General
for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief
Coordinator, says any chance of peace will be
overturned if the global community doesn't help
Yemen avert a looming famine. Full Story: Outlook (India)/Press Trust of
