Working Meetings in Georgia and Azerbaijan

The Greens Movement of Georgia / Friends of the Earth – Georgia and the
Center for Development and Environment of the University Bern, Switzerland,
have organized round table meetings in villages Gurgeniani and Khizanbavra
of the Lagodekhi Municipality, Georgia. The main goals of the meetings were
to familiarize the local residents with the environmental and water supply
problems of the aforementioned villages and explore opinions of the local
population in this regard. Representatives of civil society from
trans-boundary villages of Belakan and Zakatala, Azerbaijan, also
participated in the round tables.

Georgian and Azerbaijani citizens exchanged their experiences regarding
solving water supply, sanitation and other environmental and social
problems. It is noteworthy, that these Georgian and Azerbaijani villages are
located near to each other along the border and therefore, their problems
are common. Also, the methods used to resolve the aforementioned problems
are mostly similar. Both Georgian and Azerbaijani villages take drinking
water from river beds using simple methods of collecting filtrate. Though
due to the malfunction of the technology, there are lacks in water supply,
and very often there is drinking water contamination, etc.

The second part of the round tables was organized in villages Belakan and
Zakatala, Azerbaijan. Participants visited water supply units and explored
the opinions of the local population regarding existing problems.

Another aim of the round tables was also to identify specific ideas for
possible small projects for solving existing environmental problems and draw
specific plans for their implementation. The population of villages
Gurgeniani and Khizanbavra identified the drinking water supply as a
priority problem. Also it was indicated that during seasonal rains,
significant areas of agricultural lands are being flooded, serious problems
arise due to lacks in waste utilization, especially during summer periods
when the number of tourists increases. As the water supply was identified as
the main problem, further discussions have been arranged regarding possible
solutions.

The project team and the local population visited the head reservoir,
pipeline and other key locations. It is noteworthy that near the village
there is a salmon farm, which also collects water from the same river and
has no problems of contamination and regularity. The working group has also
shared their experience and studied the construction used by them for the
collection of water.

The project group has also conducted consultations with the experts. It was
identified that above the village there are several springs of drinking
water that might be used for ensuring water supply. Additionally, it is
possible to use the the construction utilized by the salmon farm to take
filtrate from the river. For the finalization of the project plans and
activities, it was decided to organize one more site visit with the
participation of an expert. After this, it will be possible to elaborate a
final plan to supply the aforementioned villages with safe drinking water.
It should be noted that this system will supply water to nearly 250 families
of villages Gurgeniani and Khizanbavra.
