Merkel seeks more
Russian gas

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has an ambitious plan for importing
more Russian gas.
Merkel has proposed a $10 billion pipeline
expansion that would significantly boost the amount of Russian gas transported
from Siberia.
The chancellor views the project as a way of helping
Germany transition away from coal and nuclear — and toward a future dominated by
renewable energy.
But the project has garnered opposition among some
people living in the sparsely populated area along the pipeline route, who have
filed nearly 160 objections (Zha/Shiryaevskaya, Bloomberg, July 4). —
