New cases of coronavirus are
spiking across Europe and the emergence of a
new, more rapidly spreading variant of the virus
has created an "alarming situation" on the
continent, says Dr. Hans Kluge, Europe Director
for the World Health Organization. "For a short
period of time, we need to do more than we have
done and to intensify the public health and
social measures to be certain we can flatten the
steep vertical line in some countries," Kluge
says. Full Story: The Guardian (London)

Republic this week approved legislation
outlawing child marriage, but UNICEF warns the
country, which has one of the highest child
marriage rates in the Caribbean, will need a
cultural shift to end the practice. Girls in the
country need alternatives to early marriage, and
men must stop viewing women as only mothers and
wives, says Rosa Elcarte, UNICEF representative
in the Dominican Republic. Full Story: Thomson Reuters
