The World Health Organization has signed an agreement with Pfizer that will provide the WHO's COVAX initiative with 40 million doses of coronavirus vaccine for distribution in poor countries. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says vaccines could help bring the rising global case count -- which is nearing 100 million -- under control, but says that vaccine hoarding by wealthy countries will undermine efforts to end the pandemic.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on leaders around the world to make education for all a priority in an address marking International Day of Education on Sunday. The average student has lost two-thirds of their academic year because of coronavirus school closures, and more than 800 million students around the world face further pandemic-related disruptions to their education, UNESCO reports.

Ongoing violence and instability in Ethiopia's Tigray region have disrupted health care services and could accelerate the spread of deadly diseases including the coronavirus, measles and malaria, the World Health Organization warns. Continued conflicts in the region mean the need for assistance is increasing faster than humanitarian agencies can deliver aid, United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric says.

Women & Girls
Women in Africa who have completed their secondary or tertiary education are significantly more likely to have access to financial services and resources needed to start their own businesses than those with only primary education, a report by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa says. The report urges leaders in Africa to focus on making education accessible to all women and ending gender discrimination that bars women from accessing credit or assets.

Climate and Energy
Many of the world's approximately 60,000 large dams are near the end of their useful life, and the changing weather and more intense storms caused by climate change are putting more stress on dams than they were designed to withstand, a study by the United Nations University warns. Dam failures could threaten downstream populations and have other social and environmental impacts, the study's authors say.

Approximately 20,000 foreign fighters and mercenaries have remained in Libya beyond the Jan. 23 deadline set for them to leave in a United Nations-backed permanent cease-fire agreement. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has repeated his plea for all parties to the deal to repatriate forces "without delay."
