Will you join the Zero-Waste Christmas challenge? This year, have a fun time without giving the planet a hard time - and help even more by donating to reduce waste in Europe? I’m going to challenge myself to have a Zero-Waste Christmas. I’m going to try to avoid buying packaged gifts and decorations, and stocking up on food that I may end up throwing away.

Hi,

I’ve never sent a personal email to so many people before. It’s a bit daunting. But this Christmas, I wanted to share with you my goal for the holidays.

I’m going to challenge myself to have a Zero-Waste Christmas. I’m going to try to avoid buying packaged gifts and decorations, and stocking up on food that I may end up throwing away.

I want to challenge you to do the same! Maybe there's something you buy every year for the holidays that always goes to waste - could you skip it this time and donate the money saved? We'll use it to power our anti-waste campaigns across Europe in 2019.

I’ll donate €8
I’ll donate €15
I’ll donate €30
I’ll surprise you

I took on a new challenge this November when I joined WeMove to be part of the movement to reduce waste in Europe and protect the planet. It’s a big change from one of my previous jobs as a corporate attorney where I used to help some of the companies hurting our planet and future.

We’ve all taken jobs that we’re not particularly proud of to pay the bills. But I couldn’t stand it anymore, especially as I started to learn more about what we're doing to the planet with pollution and waste. Did you know 8 million tonnes of plastic is dumped into the ocean every year - the equivalent of a truckload of waste every minute? [1] [2]

At WeMove, we work every day to reduce plastic packaging, save our seas from wasteful overfishing, and promote sustainable farming that looks after people and wildlife. Christmas doesn’t have to be about consumption and waste. Plan a Zero-Waste Christmas this year -- and chip in to boost our campaigns for a less wasteful Europe in 2019!

My challenge doesn’t mean I won’t celebrate Christmas around the dinner table with my family and friends. But I’m not going to give presents that put an extra burden on our planet or that need plastic or paper wrappings. I want to ensure that I don’t throw out any food and that the gifts I give are eco-friendly, like tickets for events, vouchers for experiences or home-made treats I know my friends love.

Thanks for listening to my story and for helping to reduce waste with us.

Donate now!

Merry Christmas,

Giulio (Rome), Mika (Bordeaux), Jörg (Lübeck) and the WeMove team

P.S. I also know Christmas is isn’t everyone’s tradition, and don’t want you to feel left out if Santa Claus isn’t a big thing in your household. It’s great if you take up the challenge of cutting back on personal waste, however you spend time with friends and family this holiday season.
