Dr. Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization's regional director for Europe, has voiced alarm over a record surge of coronavirus cases on the continent and is urging leaders to ramp up efforts to contain the virus. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Emergency Programs Executive Director Dr. Mike Ryan report that health workers account for 1 in 7 coronavirus cases, and have called on governments to protect health professionals in their countries.

United Nations
Officials from the US say they are prepared to impose sanctions on any country violating an arms embargo against Iran, despite a lack of support from other members of the United Nations Security Council and signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Iran has called on the International Court of Justice to overturn US sanctions, which it says are in violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity between the two countries.

One hundred seventy-two countries have agreed to participate in the World Health Organization's COVAX initiative, which espouses global cooperation to develop and equitably distribute a coronavirus vaccine. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has advised against rushing the process of bringing a vaccine to market, noting that the perception that a vaccine is unsafe could prevent widespread participation in vaccinations.

Pandemic-related closures of youth services in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh are driving up rates of child marriage and increasing the risk of human trafficking, according to a study led by the United Nations. UN data suggests that children make up approximately half of 700,000 refugees living in the camp and 15% of the 350 trafficking cases identified there in 2019.

Climate and Energy
Dedicating economic stimulus funds to bailing out the fossil fuel industry is not rational and will only increase pollution levels further, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this week. The wise choice is to "invest in the technologies of the future, renewable energy, nature-based solutions, sustainable transport and green technologies," he added.

Peacekeeping and Security
Members of the United Nations Human Rights Council heard from Belarus opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya by video today during a session called to discuss the ongoing crisis in the country. The council passed a resolution directing UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to investigate reports of rights abuses in the country and submit a report by the end of the year.
