Our collective action worked! Lloyd’s of London
has been seriously embarrassed this week thanks to
the mobilization of thousands of SumOfUs members who have exposed
the insurer's climate lies and greenwashing.
The situation was tight last week between Lloyd’s executives and
our coalition. SumOfUs members sent over 7,000
emails directly to the chairman and CEO, demanding that
Lloyd’s secretive “ESG Guidelines” be made public for everyone to
see.
This powerful wave of emails successfully contributed to escalate
the pressure on the polluting insurer. And when on Monday, together
with our partners from the Insure Our Future coalition, we
put a van in front of Lloyd’s HQ demanding they publish the report,
the pressure was too much to handle! A few hours later a
version of the document was leaked and Lloyd’s eventually published
their embarrassing "Guidelines", looking absolutely
foolish.
The van parked outside Lloyd’s
headquarters on Monday morning demanding that Lloyd’s publish its
"Guidelines" and end its support for the fossil fuels
industry
Vladimir, we won a battle but the fight is starting now.
As we suspected, the Guidelines reveal the extent of Lloyd’s
greenwashing.
In this secretive document, Lloyd’s outlines how it plans to
continue to allow its members to underwrite and invest in the worst
types of fossil fuel projects, despite telling everyone the
exact opposite.
So, what does that mean? Lloyd’s members can keep on insuring
coal, tar sands and other dirty fossil fuel projects. The lawyers at
the environmental group, ClientEarth, have already issued a
letter to Lloyd’s describing the published ESG Guidelines as “wholly
inadequate” and incompatible with a “science-based
transition to net-zero”, arguing that Lloyd’s may even be
breaking the law.
Vladimir, our collective action exposed Lloyd’s shameless
greenwashing and obliged its execs to publish their secretive
guidelines. Thank you!
We’re on our way to make Lloyd’s stop its disgusting
greenwashing, and we need to ratchet up the pressure now by
demanding Lloyd’s to:
- Clarify exactly how it will meet its net-zero 2050 commitment;
- Explain how its members are planning to implement the ESG
commitments that Lloyd's made in 2020;
- Confirm whether its members will stop insuring the Adani
Carmichael coal mine and the TransMountain tar sand pipeline.
Vladimir,
we need your help to make Lloyd's and other insurers STOP supporting
fossil fuel projects: can you help us strengthen our actions by
making a monthly donation?
P.S. Don't miss the wonderful advent
calendar painstakingly crafted by our friends at
Mothers Rise Up and Parents For Future UK. It
plays out a cricket
match disrupted by climate change. A group of mother
activists hand-delivered it to Lloyd’s Chairman Bruce Carnegie-Brown
on 1 December in a nod to his well known love of cricket. It's a
fantastically creative reminder that together we can get Lloyd's to
stop its climate havoc.
